Hospitals in Shanghai for international patients
Shanghai has one of China's most developed systems of care for international patients. Since 2023 the city has run a program to build international medical services in public hospitals, and in 2024 it published China's first local standard for them, covering appointments, multilingual support and insurance direct billing. Regular outpatient or international department?
Shanghai's international departments make care easier in English, and some bill your insurer directly. But they cost more, and regular outpatient care gives access to every department and specialist of the hospital. With a medical escort, either route works. Compare the two routes
Getting there and where to stay
- Airports: Shanghai Pudong International Airport (most international flights) and Shanghai Hongqiao Airport.
- Where to stay: Ruijin and Huashan are both in central Shanghai; staying nearby saves time on busy days. We suggest options and can book them for you.
- Getting around: the metro is fast and signposted in English.
