Stroke rehabilitation in China

Stroke rehabilitation in China often combines modern rehabilitation — physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy — with traditional Chinese medicine such as acupuncture. Here is how it works, what you can realistically expect, and how we help you through it.

Who it may suit

  • People recovering from a stroke who want intensive rehabilitation, for example after a hospital stay at home has ended
  • People interested in combining rehabilitation with acupuncture and other traditional therapies
  • Families looking for a structured program with daily therapy for a parent or partner

Whether rehabilitation in China is right for you depends on your condition, how long ago the stroke happened, and whether you are medically stable enough to travel. We discuss this honestly in the free consultation, and the hospital's doctors make the final assessment.

Where it happens

In China, stroke rehabilitation is offered by:

  • rehabilitation departments of large general hospitals, usually alongside neurology;
  • traditional Chinese medicine hospitals, which combine rehabilitation with acupuncture and tuina massage;
  • specialist rehabilitation centers.

Many programs are inpatient: you stay in the hospital and receive several therapy sessions a day. Others are outpatient, with daily visits. We suggest the department and route that fit your needs and budget. How we choose a hospital

What a program may include

  • An assessment by a rehabilitation doctor and therapists
  • Physiotherapy for movement, balance and walking
  • Occupational therapy for daily activities
  • Speech and swallowing therapy, if needed
  • Acupuncture and other traditional therapies, if you want them and the doctors agree
  • Regular reviews of your progress and goals

The content of your program is decided by the hospital's doctors after assessing you.

How long, and how much

  • Length: rehabilitation programs usually last several weeks. The doctor advises after assessing you.
  • Hospital costs: each hospital sets its own prices; the total depends on your treatment.
  • Our fees: a comprehensive package covers a stay of 7–10 days. For longer programs, we usually suggest inpatient support by the day or serious illness case management . We quote for your case.

Start as early as you can

Timing matters. Rehabilitation, including acupuncture, usually works best when it starts early, in the first weeks and months after a stroke, while the body is recovering fastest. Doctors in China recommend starting as soon as your condition is stable. If you are thinking about rehabilitation in China, contact us early so we can plan your trip in time.

A stroke itself is an emergency: call emergency services at home straight away. Travel to China is for rehabilitation once you are medically stable.

Recovery after a stroke varies from person to person, and no hospital can promise a particular result.

Realistic expectations and risks

  • Timing matters. Ask your own doctor whether you are stable enough to travel, and when it is safe to fly.
  • Travel is tiring. A long flight is hard after a stroke. Plan rest days, and consider bringing a companion.
  • Language. Therapy happens in Chinese. Your escort helps at assessments and key appointments, but not at every daily therapy session unless you book that.
  • Hospital routines. Wards in regular inpatient care are shared and busy. International departments are more private and cost more.

How we support you

  • Before you travel: we organize your records, scans and medicine list, write a summary in Chinese, ask the department whether they are likely to admit you, and plan your stay.
  • In China: your escort is with you at the assessment and important appointments, visits you regularly during your stay, and keeps your family updated.
  • When you leave: a summary in English or French, a home exercise plan from your therapists, and all your records for your local doctor.
  • At home: remote follow-up if you want it.

Your escort does not diagnose or prescribe. Your treatment is decided by the hospital's doctors, with you.

Before you travel

  • Recent scans (CT or MRI) as image files, not only reports
  • Hospital discharge letters since the stroke
  • A full list of your medicines, with doses
  • Your doctor's view on whether you can fly
  • Mobility needs at airports: request wheelchair assistance when you book your flight
